Demi & Tola's Traditional Wedding Ceremony

Traditional Igbo Wedding

Photography by Hannah Aryee

On September 8, 2023 we captured Demi & Tola's Wedding Traditional & White Wedding Ceremony at The Country Club of the South in Johns Creek, GA. Surrounded my friends and family turned into a night to remember. We asked Demi & Tola a couple of questions about how they met and about their wedding day.

Garden Engagement Session

Their story began in 2015 on a bright Easter Sunday at Kings Assembly Church, a small church in Champaign, Illinois. Tola walked up to Demi to introduce himself and welcome her as a first-time guest to the church. They did not immediately hit things off, if anything it was an awkward conversation.

Whenever they ran into each other after that, they would exchange pleasantries and keep it moving. Their interactions would not grow past that till the summer of that year. Towards the end of the summer, Tola was walking through the central campus gardens and saw Demi walk by, she seemed upset. Tola decided to text Demi to inquire why she had been

looking sad while walking through the campus. Demi responded to the text saying “why are you watching me?” She was not flattered by Tola’s alleged attempt to check up on her and was not keen on the idea of someone watching her from afar.

But Tola did not stop there. From that day, he would continue to randomly check on Demi. He sent his prayers and well wishes any time he was aware of an exam or important event in her life. Gradually, Demi’s response time reduced from a couple days to a couple minutes. They started a stream of conversations that would become their love story.

On a warm summer afternoon in June 2022, Tola and Demi were on their way to a send-off party for one of Tola’s colleagues at work (or so she thought). As they walked through Piedmont Park (to get to the non-existent restaurant on the other side), Tola saw a nice spot and proposed they take a quick selfie. They walked towards a look-out point overlooking the city of Atlanta. Tola gradually let Demi inch in front of him. When she turned around she gasped, as she saw Tola down on one knee. Tola proposed to Demi and she said yes!

Elegant Wedding Ceremony

Fast forward a couple months later Demi & Tola celebrated their union at The Country Club Of The South. For the traditional wedding: The groom wore a navy blue Agbada (traditional Yoruba men’s attire) and fila (cap) embroidered with turquoise colors of the bride. The bride wore a turquoise iró and buba (top and skirt) embellished with navy jewels and a gélé (head tie) to match. For the wedding reception: The groom wore a custom off-white dinner jacket with black pants The bride wore a custom off white Dress embellished with stones and pearls.

Romantic wedding first dance

Demi & Tola's favorite memory from their wedding was their wedding reception entrance and first dance. The best advice Demi & Tola would give to an engaged couple is to get an amazing wedding planner!
